Dec. 18, 2009 – Saskatoon, Sask.: One of the best Self-Care tools is to learn to surround ourselves with people that fill us with energy to replenish our reserves. Yet during the holiday season, when we need lots of energy to accomplish multiple tasks, we often have to spend time with family members that drain us. What can we do?
It helps to think of your energy as a bank account. Every time you spend time with a "filler," it’s like making a deposit. And every time you spend time with a “drainer,” it’s akin to making a big withdrawal. If your Christmas plans dictate spending time with a drainer, be sure to make a big deposit first so you don't overdraw your account!
When you spend time with someone, you are making an energy investment in them. If they deplete you and don't repay, it’s a poor investment – just like buying a bad stock. The key is to limit time with these people as much as possible, and when you must spend time with them, first fill up your energy savings account by being in the presence of those you adore.
We all know the fillers in our lives: we are happier in their presence, and feel elevated when they speak. It doesn't even matter what they say, just being around them and hearing their voice makes us feel good. There is a connection that inspires us to be a better person as they make us feel more alive. Being with these people positively affects our emotional energy, our physical energy, and our spiritual energy.

Take some time today to store up some energy for the next week, which promises to be hectic. Be aware of those who drain your energy and accept your energy limitations. Find friends that energize you and give yourself permission to treat your energy budget with the importance it deserves. Who will restore your energy this holiday season?
