Feb. 27, 2009 - Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.: Why is it that we look up to successful business people who talk about their “gut instincts,” but are dismissive of clairvoyants? After all, they’re both relying on their intuition; their hunches come from innate wisdom, not from any logical process.
This kind of intuition is available to all of us, a fact that Catherine Kenney Yunt (pictured) likes to stress. A reluctant entry into the metaphysical world, Catherine started her career as a math teacher. Despite being a “left-brain” type, she always had gut feelings about which students would be trouble, a skill that served her well. Later, when a doctor advised her to undergo a mastectomy to deal with breast cancer, her intuition told her that the procedure was unnecessary. Despite her gut feeling, she conceded to the expertise of the doctors – only to be told a few days after the operation that there was no evidence of cancer.
I heard her tell this story last June, as a warning of the importance of listening to your intuition. Later that night, I went to bed and had a strange dream: I put some money in a cookie jar, but when I came back from a bike ride, the money was gone. My intuition told me that this meant I should sell my shares, but I decided to ignore my intuition. Of course, the market crashed, and I wound up learning my lesson the hard way. If you have a hunch, go with it!
